Rotterdam is a city like no other in The Netherlands. The city has a skyline, not common here, and is extremely modern. A majority of the city was destroyed in the war. There were only a few buildings that were left standing, such as city hall. The city was re-built into a modern city with beautiful architecture, hidden gems scattered throughout and boasts Europe's largest port! It's raw. It's beautiful. It's a special city that captured my heart.
Sara-May relocated to Rotterdam in 2014 from Australia with her husband, Pat, and their two children for Pat's work. Resources were not readily available for things such as parks, things to do and so on and that got Sara-May's creative juices flowing. Sara-May founded Rotterdam Parents, a group geared towards expats specifially focussing on those things Sara-May could not find when she relocated here. She posts event information, has a playground finder, shares activities around the city, recipes and has contributors from around the world sharing information and their love for this city we call home! I LOVE what Sara-May has done! She embraced it, ran with her ideas, jumped outside of her comfort zone and made it work. Relocation is not easy and via Rotterdam Parents I have been fortunate enough to meet her and many other moms. It's a wonderful community full of families who are in the same, or similar situations, as us. Sara-May's passion and love for the city she now calls home is something I appreciate so much!
When deciding on locations for our collaboration I wanted to showcase elements that are 'echt Rotterdam' translation, really Rotterdam. We chose a stunning graffiti mural by Mark Goss and Ox Alien, as seen outside De Witte Ape and Museum Park. The weather was SPECTACULAR and the fall colors were on point. Sara and Pat's children are absolutely adorable and I loved being able to meet them and chat about life. In all my family sessions I try to sneak in some images of mom and dad which can be a challenge when you are keeping an eye on little ones however, we lucked out and lady bugs kept the kids entertained haha! Sara-May and Pat are laid back parents and watching them and their kids laugh and run around was so beautiful! Their kids have so much energy and Sara-May and Pat kept right up with them. Sara-May and Pat, I had a great time with you and your family and I can't wait to work with you again. Enjoy!
PS - Sara-May and I will be collaborating in the future so stay tuned!
